Phase 1 of the project is to build a simple Android phone application that, when started, will periodically send a single, small UDP datagram to an existing remote server via the Internet. The server, if alive, will immediately respond with a single UDP datagram.
Upon receipt of the datagram, an on-screen Server Alive indicator is painted green.
If there is no server response after 3 UDP attempts, the Server Alive indicator is painted red.
Setup of IP address, port and message string to the server can be hardcoded, entered on the screen or read from a setup file.
Additional Phases will involve:
1. Detecting multiple servers
2. Background operation
3. Email, SMS messaging when a Server is detected to be off line.
