The issue that we are trying to resolve: I am often required to perform keyword searches on documents in a directory. This I usually accomplish with google desktop or microsoft searching or program called dtSearch. The limitations with all of these softwares is the fact that none of them provide me search results on imaged based files that have no extractable text. For example I have a directory of 3 files. One searchable pdf, one word document, and one unsearchable pdf. If I were to run a search in google desktop search or microsoft search the first two would be found but not the last even if the document contained the exact same text but was only a scanned image.
The solution is this simple utility that will search a given directory and subdirectories if so selected and return a listing of all image only based files that I could then OCR and search.
Definition: Image based files include non searchable pdfs, tiffs, mdi, xps, eps, ai, odg, and jpeg.
